Bloomington – Dan Dakich has some thoughts about who the recently-named IU search committee should pick as the full-time replacement for Kelvin Sampson.
On the day the Hoosiers depart for Raleigh, N.C., for a first-round NCAA tourney encounter with Arkansas, Dakich appeared on ESPN's "Mike and Mike Show" Wednesday morning and said his expectation is he'll be back on the IU sidelines next season.
"If you're going to ask me, the right person for the job is me," Dakich said.
Dakich took over the program's reins 3 ½ weeks ago after the Sampson was forced to resign in the wake of allegations of NCAA rules violations. It's been a bumpy ride, as the Hoosiers have gone 3-3 and Dakich has been tried to manage a team that he says is still "a little bit fragile."
"It's been an interesting time, at times it's been an unbelievably gratifying fun, great time, and at others a frustrating time," Dakich said.
While most observers thought IU had no choice by to remove Sampson, Dakich understands players don't look at situations the same way.
"A players' perspective is very different from an adult, an administrator, or a coach," Dakich said. "I understood that. I could tell from the looks on their faces (during his first meeting with the team) that (Sampson's resignation) wasn't something they expected…this wasn't something internally that we even dealt with."
It hasn't been easy to get the team to re-focus on the stretch run, evidenced by the struggles down the stretch. But Dakich doesn't think his candidacy for the position should be judged solely on the team's wins and losses.
"There's a number of things going on here that I won't get into publicly," Dakich said. "There's more to what goes on in a basketball program than just being the guy standing on the sidelines."
Whether that's the case of not, he also knows that some postseason success would do a great deal to enhance his resume for the search committee.
"There's a number of things that can still play out with this team, and that's obviously my focus and I've said that since I took this job," Dakich said.
