Sutton Hoping To Zero in On Choice Soon

Largo (Md.) big man Maurice Sutton has taken an official visit to Boston College, and he's looking to take some more officials soon. Where might one the best big men still available in the '08 class be headed next?

As Tom Crean scrambles to put together a spring recruiting wish list for Indiana, indications are that 6-8, 190-pound Maurice Sutton isn't on his list.

The Largo (Md.) High School product was a much rumored possibility for the Hoosiers since he was getting some recruiting interest from Marquette during the season, but Sutton said he hasn't heard from Crean in approximately two months.

"I'm kind of thinking that my recruitment with Marquette was over as well as where he was going," Sutton said. "If he called me up I'd think about considering (Indiana). But I haven't heard anything."

With Indiana seemingly out of the picture, Sutton's focus has been on Kentucky, Boston College, Villanova, Seton Hall and N.C. State. Sutton recently took an official visit to Boston College and came away impressed with the Eagles' program. But he stopped short of committing, instead wanting to take some more visits to see if anyone can match or exceed what he saw at the ACC school.

"The visit was really nice," Sutton said. "I had the best time and Boston is a great city. Everything felt good, and I felt I could fit in there. But I didn't feel all the way, that there's no chance there be something out there that's better for me. I'll find that out after I take the rest of my visits."

Sutton said as he's evaluating teams he's trying to take note of the chemistry he sees in the locker room between players and coaches, but he's equally interested in what sort of academic opportunities he'll have.

"I want to see what my degree means, if basketball doesn't work out after college," Sutton said. "What would my degree mean in the world?"

While he's trying to figure that out, his suitors already feel like they know what a commitment from the big man will mean to them. He's one of the top available big men this spring, having averaged 18 points, 12 rebounds and nine blocks while lead his high school team to a state title.

"The coaches I talk with say I run up and down the floor well, and that I'll need to get in the weight room," Sutton said. "They also think I'm a force on defense, someone who can change a lot of shots and block a lot of shots. I can score on the offensive end as well, both with my back to the basket and by stepping out and shooting a 10-15 foot jump shot."
