Bloomington – Tom Crean has secured a couple of late commitments for the '08 class, but he's apparently not done yet.

Six-foot-10, 190-pound forward/center Maurice Sutton is the latest player to receive an IU scholarship offer. Sutton said he talked to Crean Tuesday and the Hoosier coach extended the offer over the phone.

"I thought it might be coming," said Sutton. "It's kind of late in the game and I'm sure he doesn't have any room for beating around the bush."

The Largo (Md.) High School standout said Crean originally offered him a scholarship when he was at Marquette, but that interest died down once the season got underway. Now that Crean is at IU and in need of some late additions to the Hoosiers' roster, that interest has picked back up.

Sutton said they're trying to work out a time when he can come to Bloomington to visit the IU program. He is aware that IU doesn't have any official visits remaining due to the self-imposed sanctions, but said he might be willing to visit unofficially.

While Sutton is just now getting up to speed on the Hoosier program, he said it is very much in the running.

"They fall right at the top," Sutton said. "It's Indiana. It speaks for itself. It's a basketball town. They have a great history, a couple of championships. I wouldn't mind being apart of that."

Indiana is now in the running along with Boston College, Villanova, Syracuse, Kentucky and Seton Hall for his services. Sutton said all of those schools except Kentucky and Syracuse have offered.

Sutton led Largo H.S. to the state title this past season, averaging 18 points, 12 rebounds and nine blocks. While that's attracted plenty of attention from college coaches, Sutton is appreciative of the fact Crean was originally recruiting him last spring when he wasn't getting many minutes on a couple of different AAU teams that he played for.

"Coach Crean has always been there with me through thick and thin," Sutton said. "Even when I wasn't playing with my AAU team early on, he still came to all my games and I respect that." Top Stories
