Bloomington – Class of 2008 big man Maurice Sutton will bring the speculation surrounding his college destination to an end on the final day of the late signing period.
According to Largo H.S. Coach Lewis Howard, the 6-10, 210-pound Sutton will make his college choice known at a 3 p.m. press conference Wednesday at the high school. Howard said Sutton will likely pick between Indiana and Villanova.
One of IU's primary recruiting targets for the last several months, Sutton made a visit to IU May 12, and followed that up with an official visit to Villanova later that same week. Both visits went extremely well according to Howard, making this a difficult choice for Sutton.
"It's been a very difficult decision for him," Howard said. "He's loved some of the places he's been, and more importantly with Coach (Tom) Crean, he offered him his first scholarship when he was at Marquette. It's a really tough decision for him to make."
While Sutton spoke glowingly about the IU program during his time in town, he also raved about his visit to Jay Wright's Big East program as well. Villanova is also closer to his home, and it's unclear how much of a factor that will be in his choice.
"I think (proximity) weighs on his mind slightly," Howard said. "He discussed that, but he also loved the opportunity he heard about when he was at Indiana. He loved it there, loved the atmosphere.
"At the end of the day, I can't speculate on what he's going to do."
Howard might not know what college choice Sutton will make, but he feels confident about Sutton's prospects for success once he's in a college uniform. Sutton averaged 19 points, 12 rebounds and nine blocks per game as a senior, leading Largo H.S. to a state championship.
"I think at the end of the day Maurice has the ability and potential to be a pro," Howard said. "With his work ethic and his maturity, he'll have a chance to achieve that goal for himself and be an impact player on whatever team that he chooses to go to.
"He's done a tremendous job for us the last couple of years, and he's really matured basketball wise. He led us to a state championship this year and he's a tremendous, tremendous young man."
Wednesday is the final day for players to sign a binding national letter of intent, although players are still able to make college choices after May 21. Sutton has decided to bring his recruitment to an end Wednesday, although it's unclear whether or not he's already settled on his choice.
"I'd like to think he (knows where he's going), but I'm not sure," Howard said.
