Bloomington – After his unofficial visit to Bloomington, Stephan Van Treese now knows where he stands with the new IU coaching staff.
The 6'8 ½, 220-pound forward from Indianapolis' Lawrence North H.S. was in Bloomington Monday for a sit-down meeting with Tom Crean and his assistant coaches. It was a trip that shed some light on what Crean's thoughts are about the 51st ranked player in the '09 class, and whether or not he fits into Crean's plans for rebuilding the Hoosier program.
While Van Treese said Crean hasn't offered him a scholarship yet, he said he heard plenty of good things from the first-year IU coach during his time in town.
"I liked how he'd play me and he was telling me how he likes my game and how he'd use it," Van Treese said.
With four commitments already for the '09 class, some have speculated that IU wouldn't add Van Treese to the mix since it has commitments from two other forwards – Loveland, Ohio's Bobby Capobianco and Tipton's Derek Elston. But Crean told Van Treese the staff wants to be able to see him play a couple more times first.
"They're really interested in me, but he's only seen me play twice, and that's why he hasn't offered me," Van Treese said. "But he's going to come watch me my first day of my tournament (in Las Vegas)."
Van Treese had been offered a scholarship by Kelvin Sampson's staff, and some might be frustrated by the thought of having to prove themselves again to a new staff. But Van Treese said that's not the case with him.
"It's kind of what I expected," Van Treese said of the wait for an IU offer. "I understand that they want to be able to see me play."
Van Treese, who is in Charlottesville, Va., this week for the NBA Players' Association Top 100 Showcase, is considering IU, Ohio State, Kansas, UCLA and Louisville. He averaged 11.6 points and 9.7 rebounds last season.
