Bloomington – If there's anything to the recent rumors about 2008 big man Edgar Garibay and Indiana, it would be news to his high school coach.
Compton (Cal.) Coach Tony Thomas said as far as he knows, the 6-10, 250-pound Garibay has decided to attend prep school in the fall in Las Vegas. He said Garibay made that decision to better prepare himself to make an impact at a four-year Division I school beginning in the fall of 2009.
"As far as I'm concerned, he's going to prep school," Thomas said. "I haven't heard anything else."
Indiana had been showing some interest in Garibay several months ago after Tom Crean took over the program, and Thomas did say that IU Assistant Coach Bennie Seltzer called him earlier this week to talk about Garibay's grades and whether or not he was still available. Thomas said Garibay's grades are good enough to go Division I if he wanted to in the fall, but he indicated to Seltzer that Garibay's intentions were to go the prep school route.
"If it's any different, I'd be shocked," said Thomas.
Garibay averaged 13.6 points, 12.9 rebounds and 2.0 blocks this season at Compton, helping lead the team to a 24-6 mark. He played alongside USC-bound McDonald's All-American Demar DeRozen, who averaged 29.2 points and 8.9 rebounds per contest.
Is There Anything to Garibay Rumors?
