Bloomington – The big question about the big man in IU's 2009 recruiting class appears to be resolved.
According to his AAU coach, Bawa Muniru will sign a national letter of intent with Indiana later this week. Muniru is expected to be one of six member of IU's 2009 class along with guards Jordan Hulls and Maurice Creek and forwards Bobby Capobianco, Christian Watford and Derek Elston.
Muniru's AAU coach Kerry Johnson said that the big man will sign this week, although it's unclear if it will be on Wednesday or later in the week. The early signing period runs from Nov. 12-19.
The 7'0", 255-pound center from Mt. Zion (N.C.) Academy verbally committed to IU in September, but questions arose about both the strength of his pledge as well as when he might sign a national letter of intent.
Muniru took an official visit to Oklahoma State in October, which raised concerns about whether or not he would wind up at IU. The big man also had to questions crop up about whether he'd be academically eligible in the fall of 2009. The NCAA announced earlier this fall that it would not accept grades from Muniru's former school, Charis Prep, which prompted him to transfer to Mt. Zion.
Indiana's coaching staff appeared to be waiting to make sure that Muniru would be able to take the necessary courses to meet to the NCAA's initial eligibility standards. While he does have some academic hurdles to clear before he arrives in the fall, indications are that he will be meet those requirements.
Scout.com will release its 2009 class rankings later this week, and Indiana's class is expected to be among the nation's best. Four members of the class are ranked in the nation's top 100 (Creek – No. 45, Watford – No. 72, Hulls – No. 80, Elston – No. 90), while both Capobianco and Muniru are three-star recruits who have been ranked nationally at their respective positions.
