Bloomington – Verdell Jones is back with the IU basketball team and has returned to class, but the timing of his return to the basketball court is still in doubt.
IU Coach Tom Crean said Tuesday he expects Jones to be at practice today but on the sidelines as the Hoosiers go through their final practice in preparation for Wednesday night's Big Ten/ACC Challenge match-up against Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. But his availability for the match-up against the No. 15 Demon Deacons remains uncertain.
"We're still treating him for concussion symptoms," Crean said. "I'd say he's questionable at best."
Jones is recovering after being knocked out by a backcourt screen by Cornell's Jeff Foote in Sunday's game. Jones slumped to the court after absorbing the blow and remained motionless for a couple of minutes. He was eventually immobilized by paramedics and taken to the hospital for further tests, all of which came back negative.
While the news was very encouraging that Jones hadn't suffered any long-term injuries, he'd be missed against a very good Wake Forest team that is off to a 6-0 start and recently won the 76 Holiday Classic in Anaheim, Cal. Crean said Jones will be with the team when it departs for Winston-Salem after practice today, but his availability won't be known until tomorrow.
"We have to see how he feels," Crean said. "It's in the doctors hands and how he responds to the symptoms he has."
Jones has started five of six games and is averaging 8.2 points, 1.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists. If he's unable to play he will likely be replaced in the starting lineup by Malik Story, he started in his place in the second half of Sunday's 72-57 win over Cornell.
