Bloomington – After an injury-plagued season for the Hoosiers, sophomore safety Jerimy Finch will undergo surgery Friday on his lower leg.
Finch originally injured his leg as a freshman at Florida, ending his debut season prematurely. He then transferred to Indiana last summer and was medically cleared to play, but appeared to be dealing with some lingering effects from the original injury. The hope is that Friday's surgery will get Finch on the fast track toward finally getting back to 100 percent for the 2009 season.
IU Coach Bill Lynch said if all goes according to plan with the surgery, Finch shouldn't have any issues being ready to participate in spring practice in a couple of months.
"He has to get healthy," Lynch said.
The former Indianapolis Warren Central H.S. star arrived at IU last summer with huge expectations, but the season didn't go as many had expected. After being granted a waiver by the NCAA to play this season instead of sitting out as a transfer, Finch played primarily on special teams and in a reserve role in the secondary during the first half of the season. He played sporadically during the second half of the campaign as he continued to be bothered by his leg and ankle.
Finch didn't play in IU's final five games and finished the year with just six tackles and two blocked punts in five games.
"In hindsight, the appeal process, all of a sudden he's eligible…maybe it all happened too fast in a new situation and he wasn't totally healthy," Lynch said. "Hopefully this surgery will help the healing process go faster so he can get well."
