Another 3-Point Barrage Buries Hoosiers

A bad ankle couldn't keep Devan Dumes off the court.

A hostile environment didn't prevent the Hoosiers from showing a whole lot more fight than it did Saturday at Illinois.

But those two things didn't add up to nearly enough to keep Indiana from being blown out in Columbus.

Ohio State used an early 18-0 run and 11 first-half 3-pointers to open a 23-point first half lead and ultimately rolled to a 77-53 win over Indiana.

The loss was Indiana's seventh straight, the program's losing streak since Branch McCracken's 1963-64 squad lost eight straight in the midst of a 9-15 campaign. Ohio State, meanwhile, improved to 12-3 overall and 2-2 in the Big Ten.

The Buckeyes buried the Hoosiers early with its barrage of 3-pointers. Jon Diebler connected on 5-of-6 from deep in the opening half on his way to all 17 of his points in the contest. Backcourt mates William Buford and Jeremie Simmons were both 3-of-5 from deep in the first half, and OSU connected on eight of its first nine 3s to help it open a 33-10 lead midway through the opening half.

"We were there (to defend the early 3-pointers), and Simmons looked like (Wake Forest guard) Jeff Teague out there tonight," Crean said. "We had a strategy when we were in our zone, but the strategy didn't apply when we were in man…we just have to get more aggressive on the defensive end."

Indiana didn't fold after the early onslaught, cutting the deficit to 16 at half and getting within 13 early in the second half. But the Hoosiers would get no closer as OSU extended the lead back to as many as 25 before settling for the 24-point win.

"We just got off to a very poor start, but we settled in and we started playing and some good things happened, even though we never really threatened them," Crean said.

Five Buckeyes scored in double figures, led by Buford's 19 and Dieber's 17. B.J. Mullens added 14 points and eight rebounds off the bench, while Simmons finished with 12 points and eight assists. OSU finished 13-of-24 from behind the 3-point arc, marking the second straight foe that has made 13 3-pointers against the Hoosier defense.

Indiana (5-11/0-4) was led by Tom Pritchard, who had 16 points and 11 rebounds, including seven off the offensive glass. Verdell Jones added 12 points and Dumes chipped in eight on just 3-of-12 shooting.

While OSU was bombarding IU from behind the 3-point arc, the Hoosiers made only three of their 16 attempts from behind the line. Dumes was just 2-of-7 on 3s, while leading 3-point shooter Matt Roth missed all three of his second-half attempts from deep. A starter in IU's first three Big Ten games, Roth didn't enter the game until midway through the second half and played only eight minutes.

Indiana was also hurt badly by 18 turnovers that led to a 25-9 edge for Ohio State in points off turnovers. The Buckeyes committed 14 turnovers of their own, but Indiana didn't have nearly as much converting those miscues into easy opportunities.

"The difference is 25-9 on points off turnovers," Crean said. "Where we're turning it over, we have no defense for it."

Those easy buckets helped Ohio State shoot 52.8 percent for the game, which in turn helped produce the Buckeyes' most lopsided victory in the series since a 90-65 win in 1962.

"There's not anything we can change, there's not anything we're going to change, we're just going to continue to work at an incredible pace and see where we can take it," Crean said.
