Watford, IU Recruits Pile Up Wins, Numbers

Christian Watford (pictured) and the rest of IU's incoming class continues to pile up big numbers during their senior seasons. Find out of Watford and the rest of IU's '09 class has been doing as of late, and also see how many of the Hoosiers' younger targets are performing...

Bobby Capobianco, 6-8, 230, Loveland (Ohio) H.S. – Loveland ran its win streak to 13 straight with easy wins over Harrison H.S. (73-37) and Sycamore H.S. 70-50. Capobianco scored 16 in limited duty against Harrison, and continues to lead his team in scoring (17.0), rebounding (9.7) and blocks (1.5). Loveland is ranked No. 6 in the latest state poll and faces a tough test Tuesday when it hosts Wilmington (15-1) at 7:30 p.m.

Maurice Creek, 6-4, 185, Hargrave (Va.) Military Academy – The IU-bound shooting guard had another huge game, scoring 31 and pulling down six rebounds to lead Hargrave Military Academy (19-1) to a 117-93 win over South Doctrine. Creek continues to lead Hargrave in scoring at 19.4/game.

Derek Elston, 6-8, 210, Tipton (Ind.) H.S. – Elston continues to lead Class 2A Tipton, which improved to 15-2 with wins over Northwestern H.S. and Taylor H.S. over the weekend. Elston was held to a season-low 11 in a hard-fought 42-30 grinder against Northwestern H.S. on Friday, and then bounced back with 19 points and 16 rebounds in a 59-36 win over Taylor H.S. on Saturday. Elston is now averaging 19.9 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 2.0 blocks and 2.0 steals.

Jordan Hulls, 6-0, 170, Bloomington (Ind.) South H.S. – Hulls contributed six points and four assists during a 32-8 first quarter onslaught and Class 4A No. 1 Bloomington South cruised to a 74-45 win over Columbus North. Hulls finished with 12 points, two rebounds, five assists and four steals for South, which clinched at least a tie for the Conference Indiana title while improving to 15-0. South faces Brownsburg and Warren Central this week, and then takes on Detroit Country Day in next week's highly-anticipated showdown. Country Day is ranked No. 5 in USA Today's most recent national high school basketball poll while South is No. 6. Hulls is averaging 15.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 5.0 assists.

Bawa Muniru, 6-11, 250, Durham (N.C.) Mt. Zion Academy – Muniru is the starting center at Mt. Zion this season, although we've been unable to track down his statistics thus far.

Christian Watford, 6-7, 215, Birmingham (Ala.) Shades Valley H.S. – Watford averaged 21 points and nine rebounds last week to lead Shades Valley (23-5) to a pair of victories. The IU-bound forward started slowly but finished strong in a 56-41 win over Westavia. Watford scored the final eight points of the game and finished with 17 points and nine rebounds. Watford followed that up with a game-high 25 over the weekend to lead Shades Valley to a 68-60 win over Huffman H.S. Watford is averaging 25.8 points and 13.3 rebounds.

Other Notables:
Chicago Marshall H.S. senior Darius Smith had 28 points, eight rebounds and eight assists to lead his 17th-ranked team to an 84-70 win over Orr H.S. in the first round of the Chicago Public League playoffs. Marshall returns to action Wednesday when it takes on eighth-ranked Hyde Park at 4 p.m…Highland (Ariz.) sophomore Matt Carlino scored 28 to lead his team to an 83-78 win over Chandler H.S. Friday night. On Tuesday, Carlino also led the way with 19 in a 67-48 win over Mesquite H.S. Highland is ranked No. 3 in the latest Class 5A Division I poll…sophomore Cody Zeller scored 16 points and added seven rebounds and three assists to lead Class 3A No. 3 Washington (Ind.) H.S. to a 54-33 win over Vincennes Lincoln. Zeller followed that up with eight points and six rebounds in a 47-40 win over Jasper…Avon (Ind.) H.S. sophomore Kendall Griffin scored 19 and freshman Austin Burgett added 16 in a 57-52, overtime win over Ben Davis. One night earlier, Griffin scored 18 and Burgett 16 in a 90-84 loss to Lafayette Jeff, as Jeff junior Jesse Berry poured in 46…Carmel H.S. freshman center A.J. Hammons had one of his best games of the season, scoring 12 points to lead his team to a 56-40 win over previously onc-beaten Zionsville…Broad Ripple H.S. freshman Ron Patterson had another solid game with 18 points, but it wasn't enough as his team dropped to 7-8 on the season with a 71-67 loss to Bishop Chatard…in a game that included two IU recruiting targets, North Central freshman D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera scored 19 to lead his Class 4A, fourth-ranked team to a 77-63 win over Terre Haute South. THS sophomore Justin Gant was held to eight points in the loss…Southport H.S. freshman point guard Kellon Thomas scored nine of his 11 points in the fourth quarter to lead his team to a 59-50 win over Perry Meridian…New Albany H.S. junior Donnie Hale had 10 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks in his team's 72-49 win over Jennings County. New Albany improved to 14-0 and is the second-ranked team in Class 4A…Scott County (Ky.) sophomore Ge'Lawyn Guyn had 13 points in his team's 92-56 win over Sayre. Scott County has won 15 in a row and is ranked second in the state.
