Bloomington – As Tom Crean tries to move the IU basketball program into the future, he's still being dragged down a bit by the past.
The Indiana basketball program received a public notice from the NCAA today for a substandard Academic Progress Rate for the academic years of 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08. Indiana's score was 866 for that four-year period, below the threshold of 925 where programs are in danger of losing scholarships.
While the APR scores were a result of teams that were coached by Mike Davis (2005, 2006) and Kelvin Sampson (2007, 2008), Crean's program now pays the price. Indiana not only received the public notice because of the score, but was also set to face a two-scholarship reduction as well. But Indiana voluntarily reduced its scholarship by two this past season in anticipation of the expected APR score, and as a result IU will have all 13 scholarships available for the 2009-10 season.
"We take this public notice very seriously," IU Vice President and Director of Athletics Fred Glass said in a prepared statement. "The poor academic performance for which we're being cited all occurred under two coaches who are no longer at IU. We are confident that under Coach Tom Crean's leadership and commitment to academics, responsibility, and character, we will soon be able to put our previous academic issues fully in the past. Coach Crean's outstanding academic record at Marquette, including the graduating of all of his senior players, speaks for itself."
The APR issue doesn't figure to be one that will go away any soon. Since it is a calculation of academic progress over a four-year period, past players' issues in the classroom will continue to drag down IU's APR score for the next year three years.
While Indiana has had its problems academically in recent years, Crean's former Marquette teams fared much better according to the APR calculation. Crean's final APR score from Marquette was a 970, ranking the program among the top 10-20 percent of programs in the country.
