Bloomington – Indiana football's run of recruiting success continued on Tuesday.
Coach Bill Lynch's staff pushed its number of 2010 commits to eight with the pledge of Springfield (Ill.) Sacred Heart Griffin offensive lineman Marlandez Harris.
The 6-3, 250-pound Harris attended one of IU's one-day camps last week, was offered before he departed the Bloomington campus, and decided to commit to the Hoosiers Tuesday.
"He's a really good, big athlete," said Sacred Heart Griffin Coach Ken Leonard. "He could play on either side of the ball and could play a lot of different positions."
Harris has done that the last couple of years on his high school team, starting at right tackle as a sophomore (because his team had a left handed quarterback) and then left tackle this past season when the team was led by a right-handed signal caller. He also moved into the starting lineup on the defensive side of the ball midway through his junior season and helped lead his team to the Class 6A state title.
"I think they'd like to keep him on offense, probably a guard or a center," Leonard said of IU's plans. "But I don't think they'd rule out defensive line or defensive end. He's so versatile I think he could even be a tight end. I don't think he will end up there, but he's versatile enough to do that."
Indiana saw that versatility on film, which convinced the staff they needed to see him in person at a one-day camp. As soon as that in-person visit happened, the IU staff knew he was worthy of a scholarship offer.
"They offered instantly," Leonard said. "His performance solidified what they saw on tape. They were able to eyeball him and his performance and I think that's good, because they know exactly what they are getting."
Leonard said Harris had been offered by a slew of I-AA schools in the area and was also getting looks from just about everyone in the Big Ten. Iowa State was looking at him closely and he was scheduled to camp at Purdue before deciding to pledge to IU.
"He had a really good day when he went there to IU and they were able to see him run and perform," Leonard said. "Indiana is getting a good one."
