Bloomington – Will Sheehey didn't commit to IU during his weekend official visit, but the IU program clearly made a big impression.
The 6'6", 190-pounder from Sagemont (Fla.) Upper School returned home Sunday night following his two-day stay in Bloomington and said there's a lot to like about his time in town.
"It was really exciting, definitely better than I expected," Sheehey said Sunday night. "I was able to come in, see what it's like there and I really enjoyed it."
Sheehey got to do a little bit of everything while he was in town. He spent some time with Maurice Creek, Bobby Capobianco and Jordan Hulls during his first day in town, and had an opportunity to watch game film with Coach Tom Crean and be on hand for a practice. That opportunity to get a first-hand look into the program and what Crean is trying to do had an impact on Sheehey.
"I didn't realize how dedicated the team is, and that stood out," Sheehey said. "Coach Crean is going to get it turned around quickly."
Crean's passion was also obvious to the 2010 recruiting target.
"He made a huge impression on me," Sheehey said. "The guy is a genuine basketball guy who wants to win. That's what he's going to do, and he's recruiting guys that want to be a part of doing that."
That's why Crean has zeroed in on Sheehey as a top priority for the 2010 class. Sheehey said that the IU coach told him that there's a real need for his position in the 2010 class, and that Indiana's recruiting priorities in the next several classes will be to target more bigs.
While the visit did go well, Sheehey didn't commit to Indiana while he was in town. He said that really wasn't something that he considered doing from the outset, as he instead wanted to be able to return home and compare IU to his other possibilities.
"I wasn't planning on committing when I was there on the visit," Sheehey said. "I want to make my decision during the early signing period, and to look at all of my options. I didn't want to make any quick decisions. Instead, I wanted to come back and talk to my dad and my coach against and see what they thought."
Once he does that, he'll get one step closer to making his choice. He said he's still contemplating taking another official visit and possibility an unofficial visit or two, and if all goes according to plan he'll sign this fall.
"I think I can get it all done in the next couple of weeks," Sheehey said. "If not I can always wait and commit after (the early signing period) and then sign late. Whenever I figure it out, that's when I'll do it."
