Mike Bell is a talented 6'9 forward who is one of Indiana's top targets for next season.
Mike Bell is a talented power forward playing for Palm Beach Community College. He averages 22 points and 12 rebounds a game while shooting over 57 percent from the field.
After losing his first two years of Division I eligibility, Bell wants to make an impact right away with his two remaining seasons.
"He's been to N.C. State," Coach Steve Bernath said. "He knows he only has 2 years left. He wants a team that will have a need for what he does."
With the departure of Jeff Newton from an already thin frontcourt, Indiana desperately needs more depth inside for next season. Bernath asserted that Indiana is one of Bell's favorite schools right now along with St. Joes, FAU, and Old Dominion.
Mike Davis and his staff are trying to build a good rapport with Bell who is one of Indiana's top targets for next season. Bell will make his decision shortly after the season concludes in the next few weeks.
Bernath thinks Bell will be an excellent college player.
"Mike's improved from the standpoint that he's more of a leading man. His production has been good. His future is going to be much better."
Bell has the skills to play small forward, and the size to play power forward.
"He's a very good perimeter shooter, has a good feel for the game. [He] can make the extra passes," Bernath said. "He's pretty multidimensional."
One of Bell's only weaknesses is his weight. Weighing only 225 pounds, Bell will need to build upon his frame when entering Division I play.
"I would say it would be important for him to keep putting on more weight. Putting on more weight will help him physically in the post," Bernath said. "He needs to get stronger, more aggressive, [and work on] his interior defense."
If Bell can add some weight to his frame he will be a tough player to defend with his long arms and the plethora of skills he displays out on the court.
"He's a very good rebounder, has good hands, good timing. He's got a great upside."
Perhaps Bell's best quality as a basketball player is his ability to lead. Indiana misses the inside leadership provided by Jared Jeffries and Jarad Odle last season. Bell has the maturity and the basketball savvy to immediately fill that leadership role for next season.
"You almost have to tell him to shoot; he's got a great basketball mind. He's like a coach on the floor; he knows the game."
