Bloomington – According to Scout.com recruiting analyst Evan Daniels, Indiana Coach Tom Crean extended an offer to another talented in-state prospect yesterday.
Daniels has learned that Indiana offered 6'11" 250-pound Carmel (Ind.) sophomore center A.J. Hammons yesterday. Hammons was one of a handful of top-flight recruits in town for last night's Indiana-Illinois game, along with the likes of Austin Rivers, Cody Zeller, Yogi Ferrell and Jared Drew, among others.
Hammons has helped Carmel to a quick 6-2 start to the season by averaging 10.1 points, 7.9 rebounds and an Indianapolis-area leading 6.3 blocks per game. Hammons is also shooting 70.2 percent from the floor, making 33-of-47 field goal attempts.
Carmel has climbed to No. 2 in the Class 4A poll behind only defending state champion Bloomington South. Carmel nearly ended South's 1 ½ year, undefeated run over the holiday break but squandered a 13-point lead with four minutes remaining and lost 71-68 in overtime. Carmel also owns an 83-79 victory over former state No. 2 North Central on Dec. 11. Hammons' team, though, will likely fall in this week's poll after a 60-40 loss to Center Grove Friday night.
