McGee talks ISU commitment

The Iowa State coaching staff was hoping to add an experienced point guard to their 2011 recruiting class and they did just that when Cowley (KS) Community College's Tyrus McGee pledged his commitment to Iowa State.

Cyclone Sports Report: Why did you choose to end your recruitment and pick Iowa State?

Tyrus McGee: I just got to thinking that playing for Coach Hoiberg is what I wanted to do. He had been recruiting me during the summer for as long as I can remember and after visiting the other schools I just decided t hat Iowa State was the right place for me.

Cyclone Sports Report: How important was your visit to Iowa State?

Tyrus McGee: It was real important because I really enjoyed the atmosphere the whole time. I liked the players a lot and really enjoyed hanging with Coach Hoiberg and his staff. It all just felt like one big family which made me feel comfortable.

Cyclone Sports Report: How excited are you about playing Big 12 basketball?

Tyrus McGee: It really feels great to know that I'll be playing at that level. I always dreamed about doing it and now I'll just be preparing to make sure I'm ready when I get to Iowa State.

Cyclone Sports Report: What does Coach Hoiberg like most about you?

Tyrus McGee: He told me that he likes my competitive attitude and that he feels like I can be a leader in his program. He also likes how I communicate on the court and he likes my shooting ability at the point guard spot.

Cyclone Sports Report: Have you stayed in touch with any of the players that you met during your visit?

Tyrus McGee: Yeah, I have texted with Anthony Booker. I met him on my visit and he's a really good guy so we have continued to stay in touch.

Cyclone Sports Report: How excited are you to have your college choice out of the way?

Tyrus McGee: I'm real happy be done with it because now I can just focus on my team and helping them get to the National Tournament.

Cyclone Sports Report: What are you looking to improve on during your final season at Cowley (KS) Community College?

Tyrus McGee: I really just want to work on my overall guard skills and continue to become a better floor general.

Cyclone Sports Report: What do you like most about Coach Hoiberg?

Tyrus McGee: The first thing is that he played guard and so he has been in my position of playing the guard spot in college and he already knows how to help me improve as a player. I really trust him and we have really developed the kind of relationship that I want to have with my future head coach. I just really get along with him and look forward to playing for him.
