Tavon Sledge: My final three were Iowa State, St.John's, and UTEP.
Cyclone Sports Report: When did Iowa State start recruiting you?
Tavon Sledge: Pretty much right after Coach Hoiberg got hired. Some of the assistant coaches recruited me but Coach Hoiberg was at all of my games at the National Tournament and at the Showcase this summer.
Cyclone Sports Report: How important was it to you that Iowa State's head coach Fred Hoiberg was the main guy recruiting you?
Tavon Sledge: It means a lot and really shows how much they liked my game. Some schools recruited me but they didn't show me the love like that and Iowa State just showed that they were real serious about me right away. The fact that Coach Hoiberg wanted me that bad to come to all my games was huge and I never forgot that fact when I was making my decision.
Cyclone Sports Report: How much of a factor was your unofficial visit to Iowa State back during the summer?
Tavon Sledge: It was important because I got meet all the coaches and meet some of the players. Some of the guys like Royce White and Chris Allen who I met last week on my visit weren't there yet but I really got to know Melvin Ejim and we stayed in touch after that. We built a solid relationship but the nice thing is that he never pressured me to come to Iowa State.
Cyclone Sports Report: What does Coach Hoiberg like about your game?
Tavon Sledge: He likes that I'm very aggressive, athletic for a point guard, and that I play with a big heart. He also likes that I don't like to lose and that even though I might be the shortest guy on the court you can't tell because I'm able to produce for my team. He also likes that I'm a pass-first point guard who can score if I need to and that I can lock down opposing point guards on defense.
Cyclone Sports Report: What do you like about Coach Hoiberg?
Tavon Sledge: The first thing that I told my dad was that he was like another father figure for me. What I like a lot about him is that he stays on top of me both on and off the basketball court. Some coaches just deal with you in regards to basketball but Coach Hoiberg wants you to be successful on and off the court. He always stayed in touch with me when he was allowed to and would always check to make sure I'm doing my school work and that showed me that he really cares about me as a person.
Cyclone Sports Report: Do you know what you will be studying at Iowa State?
Tavon Sledge: Yeah, I'll be majoring in Culinary Arts which is important because I guess they have a solid program for that. I already cook a little bit at home.
Cyclone Sports Report: What are your expectations for how good Iowa State will be when you join them for the 2011 season?
Tavon Sledge: I think we can make a big improvement because the staff has really brought in a lot of talent and fire power. I think the fans will see a great improvement due to guys like Royce White and Chris Allen. When I'm in the game I will just try to get them the ball in positions for them to score.
