Five questions with Jamie Vanderbeken

Cyclone Sports Report talks with Jamie Vanderbeken on a variety of topics as we near the beginning of the 2010-11 season.

Cyclone Sports Report: You had to redshirt last season due to health problems. How is your health and how do you feel you have improved during this time off?

Jamie Vanderbeken: I'm fully healthy finally and I think the biggest improvement for me is that I have conditioned myself a lot better than in the past. I'll now be able to last longer through games because I feel I'm in really good shape. I also feel I have also improved my rebounding and defense.

Cyclone Sports Report: What are your thoughts on Coach Hoiberg?

Jamie Vanderbeken: He's just real laid back and everyone knows that he knows what it takes to make us a better team. I really like the fact that he almost always keeps things very positive when trying to instruct us on something.

Cyclone Sports Report: As one of the oldest players on the team, do you feel like you need to take on more of a leadership role?

Jamie Vanderbeken: We have three seniors and we know that we have to be leaders on this team but I think we all do it in different ways. I prefer to lead more by example but I'm not opposed to speaking up if I feel something needs to be said to the other guys.

Cyclone Sports Report: Iowa State has been predicted by many publications to finish last in the Big 12. How do you and your teammates react when you see these predictions?

Jamie Vanderbeken: We kind of look at it in two ways. It frustrates you but you have to take it with a grain of salt. I don't worry about it because I know what we are capable of doing.

Cyclone Sports Report: What are your expectations for your final season as a Cyclone?

Jamie Vanderbeken: I think we can surprise a lot of people. We have a lot of young players but they are talented and they are working very hard. I also think with Coach Hoiberg's offense that we can create a lot of mismatches on the floor with the way we can spread things out.
