Focusing on Florida

Although it is relatively early in the recruiting process, Iowa State has already begun its scouting of seniors-to-be in the state of Florida. A few of the top players have already received scholarship offers from the Cyclones and some others could in the near future. Here is a sampling of some of the players within the state of Florida that Dan McCarney's staff is currently recruiting.

Charlie Jones, RB, 5-11, 195, Homestead (Fla.) South Dade H.S.

He is perhaps the top tailback on the Cyclones' board. Jones is a powerful back with good speed and rushed for 1,570 yards and 19 touchdowns as a junior. Jones will be a three-year starter for South Dade. As a sophomore he rushed for 969 yards and five TDs. His current favorites are Miami, FSU, Florida, LSU, Georgia and Georgia Tech. The Cyclones have offered a scholarship, but it may be tough to get him out of the southeast. Jones earned first-team All-Dade County honors last fall.

Tyease Thompson, RB/DB, 6-1, 175, Lakeland (Fla.) George Jenkins H.S.

Received much praise for his junior campaign and locked up a spot on the Florida Sports Writers Association's Class 4A First Team. He cleared the 1,800-yard mark and averaged more than eight yards per carry, scoring 19 touchdowns. He approached 2,300 total offensive yards. Thompson currently has offers from the Cyclones, LSU and Maryland. Auburn, Florida State, Georgia and Miami have shown interest.

Greg Carr, WR, 6-5, 185, Citra (Fla.) North Marion H.S.

A third-team all-state selection last season, Carr played alongside ISU signee Mike West and caught 35 passes for 700 yards and nine touchdowns. He's also being recruited as a basketball player for North Marion. He already has offers from the Cyclones, Florida State, Michigan State and East Carolina, and is being recruited by Miami, Florida, NC State, Nebraska and Virginia.

Damian Sims, RB/DB, 5-10, 185, Boca Raton (Fla.) Pope John Paul II H.S.

One of the top running backs in Palm Beach County last fall, Sims rushed for 1,513 yards (an average of 8.3 yards per attempt) and 19 touchdowns on 182 carries. Is starting to get a lot of recruiting attention following his recent Nike Camp performance. He earned all-state status in Florida's Class 2A as a junior.

Jacky Claude, OL, 6-4, 285, OL, Miami (Fla.) Edison H.S.

A national recruit, Claude is one of the top offensive line prospects from South Florida. He is a likely offensive guard at the next level. He is quick, naturally strong and moves well. Claude did not give up a sack as a junior. He already has an offer from ISU and Ohio State and is getting attention from Florida, Miami, Michigan and Michigan State.

Chris Clemons, RB/DB, 6-3, 190, Arcadia (Fla.) DeSoto H.S.

A speedy offensive skill player, he cleared the 1,000-yard plateau on the ground while scoring 14 touchdowns. ISU and Michigan State have offered scholarships and Florida is hot on his trail.

Chris Zellner, DL/TE, 6-3, 225, Sarasota (Fla.) Booker H.S.

A third-team all-state selection one year ago by the Florida Sports Writers Association, Zellner is actively being recruited by ISU, Iowa, Wisconsin, Auburn, Clemson, Florida State and Georgia. Much of his recruiting attention is as an interior defensive lineman.

Daniel Phelps, DB/RB, 5-11, 185, Sarasota (Fla.) Booker H.S.

He impacted his team on both sides while also returning kicks as a junior.

Mosell Axson, LB, 6-1, 225, Lakeland (Fla.) George Jenkins H.S.

Mickey Baker, LB, 5-11, 200, Quincy (Fla.) Shanks H.S.
