"Pittsburgh and Iowa State offered me scholarships in the last few weeks," said Ponton, who led his team to a 7-3 record and state playoff appearance last fall. "It was a big time for me and my family. They're both pretty good schools. I like both of them. I'm not leaning to any side yet. I'm trying to keep my options open.
"I went to the NIKE camp in Gainesville during the week of spring break. It was a great experience. There was a lot of competition and work. I worked with the running backs and they showed us how to run the 40 after we ran it. They showed us some techniques that would increase our times. I use those techniques now when I run with the team."
While Ponton's future position could be on offense at running back or defense, he's likely to play strong safety for the Cyclones.
"Iowa State's recruiting me to play strong safety," he said. "(Coach Chris Ash) said I wasn't scared to hit and would make big hits. I have quick feet and am always around the ball."
Ponton will likely play out the recruiting process through his senior year to see if other programs like Michigan State, Ball State or others hand out offers.
"I'm going to wait a while for that and see how my upcoming season goes," he said.
