THE Preview: Iowa State vs Baylor

The Cyclones (1-4, 0-2) won last year in Ames but the Bears (5-0, 2-0) are favored by 33

Iowa State (1-4, 0-2 Big 12) takes on No. 12 Baylor tonight at 6 p.m. on ESPNU. The Cyclones won last year in Ames but the Bears (5-0, 2-0) are favored by 33.

Matchups:

Iowa State pass offense vs. Baylor pass defense

Cyclones quarterback Sam Richardson is coming off a game in which he completed a horrendous 39.5 percent of his passes, so bad it dropped his season average from Satisfactory (62.3) to Needs Improvement (57.4).

Can Richardson do a better job completing passes down the field against a Baylor secondary that will squeeze everything close to the line of scrimmage and dare the Cyclones to go deep? That'll be a key to the game. Richardson was 5-for-16 on passes where the ball traveled 10 yards or further in the air. It's understandable for deep passes to be less efficient but there were several opportunities for Richardson and wideout Quenton Bundrage, who was targeted 13 times, to connect.

Bundrage of course will be option No. 1, but the Cyclones could use a rebound game from Tad Ecby, who after catching 16 balls in the first three games has one each in the last two. Tight end E.J. Bibbs down the seams would open up outside routes.

The Bears are led in the secondary by safety Ahmad Dixon, third on the team with 20 solo tackles. Dixon's sideline interception clinched the win over Kansas State last week.

Baylor is third nationally in opponent completion percentage (44.7), 28th in yards per attempt (6.3) and 20th in yards per game (190.8).

ISU rush offense vs. BU pass defense

Iowa State did not do a good job picking up first downs last week; six three-and-outs and a disadvantage in time of possession and total plays. The best way to stop Baylor's offense, as the cliche goes, is to keep it off the field.

The Bears were slow to stop Kansas State's delayed rushing attack. While the Cyclones don't have those looks in their playbook, they pull on about every run; Baylor's four-man front has trouble when the playside is stacked, so that's good news for the Cyclones. Aaron Wimberly will start after sitting out most of the second half against Texas Tech, but it remains to be seen if he can tote such a heavy workload again. Iowa State will need to get its other running backs going, too.

Baylor's defense is giving up 3.29 yards per rush, 22nd nationally. Iowa State is picking up 3.73 yards an attempt.

BU pass offense vs. ISU pass defense

Oh, boy. We've discussed this matchup plenty this week. Iowa State will try its best to keep everything in front of its soft zone defense, forcing Baylor to put together the perfect 75-yard drive rather than strike big once for 75 yards. There's a difference there.

Perhaps the best stat to know is Baylor's yards per attempt — an insane 14.4, which leads the country. The Bears are averaging a first down, and then some, every time they drop back to pass.

Keep in mind Baylor will use a hefty dose of screen passes, and while these passes can pick up yards if the defense fails to execute, they mostly serve to draw safeties closer and closer to the line of scrimmage.

BU rush offense vs. ISU rush defense

The Cyclones are toast if they have to commit six or seven defenders to the run game, so it's imperative the defensive ends get good pocket pressure while keeping containment on cutbacks, while the defensive tackles clean up the middle so linebacker Jeremiah George is free to play the run.

Anything fancier is dangerous and must be executed properly. For instance, say the Cyclones stunt their defensive tackles on, oh, third-and-six, thinking pass. Tackle Brandon Jensen wheels around to the right and attacks the B gap between the left guard and tackle. If the Bears run a draw play through the 2 hole (center and right guard), there could be a big lane as the downfield blockers can get to the linebackers without resistance.

Baylor's Lache Seastrunk could edge into the Heisman discussion as the season wears on; he's ninth with 129.6 yards per game, and that's with rarely playing in the fourth quarter. Glasco Martin has been hampered by injury but is a great changeup to Seastrunk, a bigger back with power up the middle.

Keys to the Game

1. Avoid the big play defensively. Baylor scored five times last weekend against Kansas State, three being very long passing plays. Iowa State will attempt to keep everything in front of its zone defense, but that's much easier said than done, as Baylor's receivers get upfield and create separation better than any group in the country. The Bears are going to get their points, but the Cyclones need to make them work for it and convert third downs while marching down the field.

2. Red zone defense. Iowa State opponents are scoring touchdowns 64.7 percent of the time they enter the red zone in 2013. The mark last season was 56.8. What's ailing the Cyclones in this regard? There have been dropped interceptions, poorly-played balls, missed assignments. As the field shrinks the closer an opponent gets to the goal line, theory suggests it's easier to play defense (less ground to cover, etc.), but that's not the case this season.

Baylor is scoring touchdowns on 76 percent of its red zone trips. Iowa State, should it limit the big strike, needs to clamp down inside the 20s.

3. The time of possession and number of plays battle. Kansas State last week ran 80 plays to Baylor's 58 and held the ball nearly 20 minutes longer. The Wildcats didn't win but they held a lead in the fourth quarter and played as well as Bill Snyder could have hoped. Iowa State can't go three-and-out as often as it did last week against Texas Tech (six). The Cyclones are best when they get the tempo humming, but could that work against them this week?

4. Win the special teams. Considering it took 19 years for Iowa State to return a true kickoff return for a touchdown, another is unlikely Saturday with 50 percent of Baylor's kickoffs resulting in a touchback. Never know, though. Jarvis West is playing with more confidence than he ever has. Even if he doesn't take a kick to the house, he could help his offense out with a short field. Same thing with punt returns.

Head coach Paul Rhoads elected to fake an easy field goal last week, saying only touchdowns were going to win a game against Texas Tech. He'll have the same mentality this week, but it's important for the Cyclones to keep putting points on the board. If it's a manageable field goal, take the three.

5. Stop the run. Baylor didn't run it well in its 2012 loss to Iowa State and didn't run it particularly well last week, either. Should the Cyclones corral Seastrunk and Glasco Martin early with a four-man front and a linebacker or two, it'd take away the potency of Baylor's play-action fakes, which you'll see frequently.

Baylor offensive snapshot

On just about every play, Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty and running back Lache Seastrunk will meet for a mesh point. If Petty thinks the run looks optimal, he'll hand it off and Seastrunk will follow Nayvar and interior linemen Spencer Drango and Cyril Richardson up the middle. If Petty knows the outside passing lanes are there, he'll pull the ball back while making his reads. It's a play-action fake not necessarily intended to fake out the defense so much, as it's predictable, but instead to make that defensive end, linebacker or safety to take just a second longer to decide what to do: rush upfield against the run or keep backpedaling.

"The ball lets out of the quarterback's hand so fast vertically, horizontally or handing it off," Rhoads said. "Everything they do, run pass, screen game, quick game, downfield game, is fast and largely efficient because of that. They perform at an alarming rate."

In the below shot, taken of Baylor's win over Louisiana-Monroe, Petty fakes it to Seastrunk as the Warhawks blitz. Recognizing that, he gets an early start on his footwork, which you can see in the middle shot; Seastrunk has just run through the fake and Petty is already dragging his left foot while planting his right. The next step after the gather is simply stepping into the throw. The pressure never comes anyway and the Bears score as the fake gave the receiver a split-second advantage on the defender, while Petty got rid of the ball quickly enough to capitalize.

Baylor defensive snapshot

If you're of the mindset the Cyclones need to throw the ball like they did last year to beat Baylor, know first what sort of coverages Baylor uses. Against Kansas State, the Bears ran quite a bit Cover 0 — aka, full-on man-to-man — with no high safety. The Wildcats didn't inspire fear with their deep passing game. Baylor also utilized quite a bit Cover 1 Robber, seen below, in which there's a single high safety and an intermediate defender responsible for the middle of the field and the quarterback. Similar to a QB Spy but with more coverage responsibility.

Fun with Stats

  • The Bears have 119 plays of 10 yards or more, ninth nationally. They have 48 plays of 20-plus yards, third nationally. Thirty plays of 30-plus yards, first nationally. Twenty two plays of 40-plus yards, first nationally. Fourteen plays of 50-plus yards, first nationally. Eleven plays of 60-plus yards, first nationally. Six plays of 70-plus yards, first nationally. Three plays of 80-plus yards, first nationally. One play of 90-plus yards, tied (with Iowa State and others) for first nationally.

  • Baylor is averaging 9.32 yards a play, first nationally.

  • Nick Florence in 2012 averaged 9.3 yards an attempt with a completion percentage of 61.6. Robert Griffin III completed 72.4 percent of his passes in his 2011 Heisman season for 10.7 yards an attempt. So …

  • Despite playing in the fourth quarter only once, Bryce Petty — a former Tennessee commit before Lane Kiffin left — is fourth nationally in passing yards a game, with 338. He's completing 70.2 percent of his passes (No. 9) and is averaging a ridiculous 14.8 yards an attempt (No. 1). Petty is No. 93 nationally with 22.8 attempts per game.

  • Petty is second in ESPN's Total QBR, with a 95.1 (out of 100). Florence in 2012 was No. 10 (79.8). RG3 in 2011 was No. 4 (83.2). Florence and RG3 were better runners than Petty, who has an expected points added through rushing plays of .8. ISU's Sam Richardson, for example, has a run EPA of 7.7.

  • Baylor running back Lache Seastrunk is No. 9 nationally with 128.6 rushing yards per game. This is despite receiving just 27 percent of his team's total rushes

  • Seastrunk will easily eclipse 1,000 yards. Freshman back Shock Linwood is picking up 7.57 yards a carry, for 318 yards and five touchdowns. Senior back Glasco Martin only has 170 yards, but he's averaging 4.59 yards a carry for four touchdowns. Martin was expected to push for a 1,000-yard season.

  • I thought heading into the season LSU had the nation's best receiving tandem with Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr., but so far it's been Baylor, with breakout deep-threat Antwan Goodley (26.12 yards a reception — silly) and Tevin Reese. Goodley is second nationally in yards per game (135.8) and Reese is seventh with 121.8. Each has six touchdowns.

  • Extrapolated to a seven-game schedule, Baylor would be at 536.2 total plays, which would currently rank sixth nationally.

  • Baylor is converting on 54.69 percent of its third downs, the sixth-best rate in the nation.

    Notes

  • Baylor wideout Cory Coleman is suspended the first half for targeting last week against Kansas State.

  • Iowa State tackle Jacob Gannon won't play. Kyle Lichtenberg is expected to start in his place.
