Thirty minutes after finishing a phone interview about his weekend in Ames, Downing, the Whitefish Bay (WI) punter who committed to Iowa State in September, typed up and sent another comment:
"Another thing I would add to my visit experience is the fact that (Paul) Rhoads makes me want to be a part of the program. He really is like no other coach I have ever talked to. To end the weekend in our meeting he told me that I was a part of the family and that's really how I feel, a part of the family, which is why I am a Cyclone," Downing said via text message.
Downing, in his third trip to Ames, got to check out the College of Engineering, his favorite tour of the weekend, as he wants to be an engineer, hang out with Cyclones punter Kirby Van Der Kamp, who he looks up to, and get to know the other Iowa State commits on hand.
"They did an awesome job with the visit," Downing said of Iowa State. "They did such a great job with the hospitality."
Since committing to Iowa State, Downing continues to hear from other schools but has no plans to open up his recruitment.
"I'm really happy where I am right now," he said. "I think the visit definitely won me over."
Whitefish Bay's season wrapped up Nov. 1, the Blue Dukes finishing with a 7-5 record.
