In what stands as their best remaining chance to pick up a win this season, the Cyclones host Kansas on Saturday in the battle to not finish at the bottom of the Big 12 standings.
The Jayhawks snapped their 27-game Big 12 losing streak Saturday with a very surprising home win over West Virginia, but they'd still finish last in the conference standings if they lost to Iowa State, by virtue of the tiebreaker.
Iowa State is still searching for its first conference win of the season, its last being more than a calendar year ago, 51-23 at Kansas in which Sam Richardson came off the bench to throw for four touchdowns. The Cyclones haven't beat a conference opponent at home since late October of 2012.
Charlie Weis' latest transfer reclamation project this year, Jake Heaps, didn't work out this year. The former No. 1 quarterback, who left BYU after the 2011 season, lost his job to Montell Cozart, a dual-threat player who rushed 13 times for 60 yards against the Mountaineers but completed just five of 12 passes for 61 yards.
Michael Cummings, a part-time starter last season, hasn't played since early October.
