The recruiting process is just getting going for Iowa Western (JUCO) freshman forward Darien Williams, who has early offers from Kansas State and Fresno State.
Williams, who played at St. John Bosco High before coming to Council Bluffs, was in Ames on Monday night for Iowa State's game against Kansas.
"I've been watching Iowa State since Fred Hoiberg got there, just as a fan, watching them for a long time because I loved the way they play," Williams told AllCyclones.com. "I was a fan of theirs even before they recruited me. Then coming up there and seeing them in person, Hilton Magic and the whole atmosphere, it was great. I want to come back in a month or two."
After the game — a 77-70 Kansas win — Williams chatted up Hoiberg.
"He was telling them to keep in touch," Williams said. "(Assistant coach) Matt (Abdelmassih) is gonna come to my game [Jan. 15] and I think Hoiberg might come but he's definitely coming [Jan. 22] when we play at Indian Hills."
Williams, a 6-foot-9 2015 prospect, is also hearing from Oregon, Creighton, Iowa and Louisville.
It might be a while until Williams makes his decision, as he doesn't expect his recruitment to heat up until after the season. High on his wish list is a free-flowing style of play.
"I'm a versatile player so I need to play somewhere where they'll use my versatility, inside and outside," Williams said. "I want to go somewhere that's up-tempo and will run out. And also I'm looking for a college town with great fans and I also want to play at the highest level in a high-major conference."
Hoiberg and the Cyclones have built a Top 25 program via transfers of all types — immediately-eligible graduate players (DeAndre Kane), player, run-of-the-mill college transfers (Royce White) and JUCO guys (Dustin Hogue).
"I feel I can play in any situation but it is encouraging to see that they utilize those guys," Williams said.
