Johnson Plans ISU Visit, Talks Cyclones

Iowa State is after another high school cornerback to round out its 2014 class and Clearwater (FL) three-star Mike Johnson is a guy the Cyclones are looking at. Johnson will visit Iowa State this weekend

A high-ankle sprain cut short Mike Johnson's senior season at Countryside High, the two-way player finishing with nine rushing touchdowns and three interceptions.

The ankle, Johnson says, is finally "getting better," just as his collegiate future gets more clear.

After taking unofficial visits at a circuit of Florida schools — Florida State, UCF, USF — as well as Louisville, Johnson has his first official visit this weekend at Iowa State.

The Cyclones are in the hunt for another cornerback in their 2014 recruiting class and Johnson is one of their top targets at the position.

"That's a great program and it's somewhere you'll be surrounded by great people," Johnson told on Tuesday evening.

Johnson is friends with former ISU cornerback Leonard Johnson, who has been talking the Cyclones up. Along with ISU's new (2012) facilities, Mike Johnson likes that it's a Big 12 program, which means plenty of opportunity for a cornerback.

"They throw a lot," he said.

After the Jan. 24 trip to Ames, Johnson will either go to Louisville or Marshall for an official. He's still deciding and says he expects to take that trek rather than commit to Iowa State at the end of his visit.

"I'm looking for a team that I can [grow in] with a family atmosphere," Johnson said. "Also a good physical therapy program. And coaches, can't forget about coaches." considers Johnson the No. 129 cornerback in the 2014 class. Says national analyst Jamie Newberg:

"Johnson is better in zone coverage than man to man. He does a nice job of reading quarterback's eyes and has good awareness ... does show nice ball skills ... is solid in run support but not an overwhelming striker ... will set the edge and turn everything inside to pursuit."
