@Trey_Scott3 youth at DL..who will contribute this year and years to come? Next McDonough like project— Adam Shouse (@AdamJShouse) August 1, 2014
Thanks for the question, Adam. I thought it'd be timely to answer this today, since we just spoke with Shane Burnham and a few of the defensive tackles.
Think you're looking at a starting unit that consists of Devlyn Cousin at three-tech and Brandon Jensen at nose guard. This is per Cousin today, for what it's worth. Cousin is a more natural nose but the Cyclones need him at defensive tackle and he's quick enough to make it work.
The chief backup at tackle will be redshirt freshman Robby Garcia, all 280 pounds of him. He's not nearly big enough yet, but the staff really seems to like him. I guess he'd be the Jake McDonough-like project you speak of.
"Some guys just have football to them," Burnham said today of Garcia. "Robby Garcia's picked up where he left off."
I'm not sure if much should be expected of Vernell Trent, a fellow redshirt freshman who Burnham says is taking "some steps in the right direction." As for Pierre Aka, a third-year sophomore, "he has at this point shown he's improved," per Burnham.
An interesting name might be walk-on Ma'Kayle Phillips of Waterloo, who Burnham is impressed with.
