AUSTIN, TEXAS — A late field goal off the foot of Texas kicker Nick Rose sent Iowa State to a narrow 48-45 loss Saturday night, but it was an outcome Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads said could have ended up differently.
Midway through the first quarter, the Longhorns held onto a 14-0 lead and were driving in the red zone to extend it. Instead, cornerback Nigel Tribune intercepted Texas quarterback Tyrone Swoopes and the Cyclones went on to score 21 unanswered points.
In the end, the shootout went in favor of Texas. The two teams exchanged touchdowns in the final 1:19 before Rose hit the game-winning field goal with three seconds remaining.
Here is what Rhoads said after the loss.
