Markell Simmons isn’t worrying about who is showing interest and who isn’t at this point in his recruitment, but the interest has picked up nonetheless.
The 6-foot, 190-pound safety out of Pima C.C. has netted eight offers to date, including Power 5 offers from Iowa State, Oregon State, Utah and Washington State. Three of those schools—Iowa State, Washington State and Utah—visited the JUCO defensive back this spring in Arizona.
“They came to see me,” Simmons said of the schools. “They’ve just been telling me they’re really excited to recruit me and they want me at their school. They’ve just been checking up on me, seeing how I’m doing in school, making sure I’m on track and things like that.”
Simmons is on track to graduate in December as a mid-year transfer with three years to play three. He is being recruited strictly as a safety.
The Cyclones have sent defensive coordinator Wally Burnham to Arizona to recruit Simmons, and the word from Burnham has been that Simmons is one of Iowa State’s top priorities at safety.
“He said I’m their guy,” Simmons said. “I have good size and speed. He said I would fit perfect in their defense and it’s the Big 12, so they pass a lot. I like that as well.”
While the majority of Simmons’ offers come close to home in Arizona, he is willing to go to anywhere that feels like a good fit.
“I would go to any school,” Simmons said. “If any school is right for me and my heart is there, I’ll go anywhere whether it’s on the west or east coast.”
Simmons is in the process of talking summer visits with his parents. He plans to take at least one visit in July to a school out west and could take some visits in August. He is expected to make a decision during the season.
“Would I like the school without football? If football wasn’t in the picture, would I like just going to the school?” Simmons said. “That’s what I want [to find out].”
