Monday night, the Cyclones finally did.
Steve Prohm called Cook, a 6-foot-8 forward in the 2016 class, Monday night and offered the athletic big man. Cook had been looked at by Murray State previously while new Iowa State assistant Daniyal Robinson had been recruiting him to Loyola.
“It’s actually Coach Prohm’s assistant [recruiting me], but I talked to Coach Prohm more,” Cook said Tuesday. “I talked to him last night and we’ve been talking since. He said he just liked my style of play and thinks I would be good for the system.”
The offer for Cook brings his list to six. In addition to the Cyclones, Cook holds offers from Kansas State, Oklahoma State, LSU, Houston and Tulsa. Cook expects Arkansas to offer soon while Texas, Missouri and a few others have shown interest.
Cook, a St. Louis native, averaged 11.4 points and 9.3 rebounds per game as a freshman for Connors State College. Despite the six offers, Cook considers his recruitment somewhat new at the moment.
“It’s still actually the beginning of my recruitment,” Cook said. “I haven’t even arrived at any of the camps. I haven’t been to the top-100, so who knows what else is coming.”
That new interest will need to come rather quickly as Cook’s recruitment is surging ahead. He hopes to take three or four visits between now and his season and plans to commit before his sophomore season starts in October.
Will Iowa State get one of those visits?
“Of course,” Cook said. “Last night was my first time talking to Coach Prohm. He said he’s going to be talking to me more because he’s really interested. So he’s going to be calling me and texting me a lot. We texted after we talked on the phone for about another 30 minutes and he just told me how interested he was. Of course in the fall I’m going to take a visit.”
Other visits will likely be given to LSU, Arkansas and Kansas State, Cook said, and it’s possible a fifth visit could enter the fold too.
Early on, it appears Iowa State at least has Cook’s attention.
“With Iowa State coming in there, it’s amazing, because Iowa State is a good school, plus Prohm is a good coach and he’s running a good system,” Cook said. “I’m really interested in Iowa State.”
