Cyclones Scoop: Visits and Decisions

Iowa State may be in the midst of the recruiting dead period, but that doesn't mean there isn't any news. Here are some updates on 2016 prospects.

The recruiting dead period will extend a bit deeper into July before the action begins picking up again, but the lack of communication hasn't completely shut down news when it comes to Iowa State.

JUCO cornerback Kamal Hardy made his sudden commitment leading into the Fourth of July weekend, and several other Iowa State prospects with offers are drawing closer to their decision dates with each passing day. Here are some notes on pending visits, commitment dates and more.

JUCO athletes lining up visits

Iowa State has offers out to a number of JUCO athletes for the 2016 class, and that list will grow in the weeks and months ahead. There are a few JUCO prospects in particular who are lining up visits.

While JUCO cornerback Kamal Hardy became Iowa State's third commit in the 2016 class, he hasn't actually been to Ames for a visit. That's something he could do as soon as the end of the month or sometime next month. Hardy's hope is to make one unofficial visit and one official visit to Iowa State. He, of course, is still looking at visits to Arizona State and Indiana despite his commitment to the Cyclones.

Two other JUCO prospects are lining up visits too. JUCO receiver Chris Booker out of Dodge City C.C. picked up an offer earlier this summer from the Cyclones and is looking at a visit on the weekend of July 24, he tells Meanwhile, JUCO defensive end Traland Webber, who holds Power 5 offers from Arizona State, Minnesota, Kansas and Iowa State, has an official visits set for Iowa State's Homecoming game against Texas in October.

Two Florida Prospects Are Getting Close

Iowa State extended a number of offers in Florida during the spring evaluation period, and two of those beneficiaries are nearing their decision deadlines with Iowa State very much in the picture.

Frostproof (Fla.) guard Michael Smith Jr. attended the Cyclones' satellite camp in Florida during June and was offered that same day. He will make his decision August 1 and will be selecting from a group of five that includes Iowa State, Georgia Southern, Western Kentucky, Florida International and Middle Tennessee. He hasn't visited Ames, and it isn't yet clear if that will be possible prior to his commitment.

Meanwhile, Tarpon Springs (Fla.) linebacker Jake Hansen is also drawing close to a decision. Hansen hasn't 100 percent locked in his decision date, but told he still plans to commit somewhere around August 1. Hansen was one of eight visitors for Iowa State's Golden Ticket Day in late June and the Cyclones are in good shape. He hasn't set any other visits as of yet.

Clarity Should Come Soon At QB

The hot topic in Iowa State recruiting circles since the beginning of camp season in June has been who Iowa State will offer at quarterback for 2016.

Camps and decision dates have come and gone and no decision has been made. While nothing is guaranteed, there's likely to be some clarity to the quarterback situation not long after the conclusion of the July dead period.

The three quarterbacks thought to be in contention for the offer are Steven Frank (Ill.), Michael Frankl (Iowa) and Tyler Ferre' (Texas). Frank is also now drawing interest from Washington and expects to hear from Iowa State later this month.

One Quick Name to Watch

One name to watch in the weeks ahead is California defensive back Lawrence White. Iowa State offered White early in the spring evaluation period and he still has strong interest in the Cyclones. In addition to Iowa State, White holds a Power 5 offer from Washington State. He told recently that he hopes to visit Ames on and official visit sometime this season.
