Ohio Running Back David Montgomery Likes What He Sees at Iowa State

Cincinnati (OH) Mt. Healthy running back David Montgomery has seen his recruitment pick up and appears to be focused on two Power 5 options as Signing Day nears.

Cincinnati (OH) running back David Montgomery saw his recruitment spike last week as two Power 5 offers rolled in with two weeks until Signing Day.

Now, Montgomery has an early leader.

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound running back, who is ranked as the No. 7 running back in Ohio and the No. 69 overall running back in the class, added offers from Illinois and Iowa State and his stop in Ames from Jan. 22-24 put the Cyclones ahead.

“They really want me at the school and myself in that offense, so they really want me to come in and make an impression, which I really liked,” Montgomery said. “They want me to make a decision for me and not for the fact that they want me. I felt like that was really cool. I really liked the school. I loved the visit. The whole staff was great and I can see myself there. So it was a pretty good overall visit.”

Montgomery, who rushed for 6,441 yards and 85 touchdowns at Mt. Healthy in Cincinnati during the past three seasons, will visit Illinois this coming weekend. He previously visited Marshall and is likely deciding between the three schools at the moment, though the two Power 5 offers are sticking out.

Iowa State saw Montgomery in Ohio on Tuesday when Bryan Gasser and Lou Ayeni stopped in to look at him before offering. The Cyclones see Montgomery as yet another compliment to soon-to-be sophomore Mike Warren.

“[Coach] just said he sees me as a great tailback like Mike,” Montgomery said. “He just sees me taking some pressure off of Mike. I would love that.”

Montgomery will get an in-home visit from Illinois on Wednesday before Iowa State stops in to see him Thursday with Ayeni, Gasser and head coach Matt Campbell.

While Signing Day is nearing fast, Montgomery is trying to sort through his options in the coming days before announcing a decision on Feb. 1 or 2.

“Right now I would say that it goes Iowa State and [then] Illinois right now just because I haven’t been to Illinois’ facilities, I haven’t been to the school, I haven’t met the whole coaching staff. I just want to talk to the rest of the coaching staff,” Montgomery said. “I haven’t made my decision yet, but Iowa State is a great school and it’s a top pick right now because I’ve been there already.”

Montgomery’s family accompanied him on his trip to Iowa State and will likely do the same at Illinois. That group will ultimately help him make a decision before Signing Day, though he has key factors in mind too.

“[Key factors are] my feelings about it and how comfortable I feel with the decision I make,” Montgomery said. “You get that feeling when something’s right or something’s wrong. That’s how it is.”
