Iowa State 2016 Class Review: Special Teams

AllCyclones.com is taking a position by position look at Iowa State's 2016 class with the help of each position coach. In this edition, we look at special teams, where the Cyclones added their long snapper.

Who Iowa State Added

The Scouting Report

Steven Wirtel: In Wirtel, Iowa State adds the nation's No. 6 overall long snapper according to Kohl's Kicking. Wirtel is a consistent snapper with good velocity on his snaps, but he is also a long snapper with good athleticism. Also a receiver in high school, Wirtel has athleticism at 6-foot-4 that allows him to excel in punt coverage.  — Scout's Alex Halsted

The Position Situation

With the loss of long snappers Jake Rhoads and Tanner Tusha from 2015, the expectation is that Wirtel will start for Iowa State from Day 1 in 2016. The Cyclones brought Wirtel in for that very reason and it should be his job from Day 1 of fall camp. Wirtel is continuing to develop but should have no problem making an impact immediate.
