When Indianapolis Ben Davis defensive end Esezi Otomewo received an offer from Iowa State at the beginning of March, he was intrigued by what he learned.
Knowing Matt Campbell and Co. had recently taken over the program, Otomewo wanted to get a closer look at the changes and finally had the opportunity to do so for Iowa State’s spring game when he visited with teammate Leshaun Minor.
The message from Campbell on the trip coincided with what he’d seen.
“He was real with me,” Otomewo said. “He told me he was going to change the program. He said we’re here to get an education too.”
The 6-foot-6, 215-pound Otomewo holds offers from Iowa State, New Mexcio, Buffalo, Toledo, Miami (OH) and Western Michigan at the early point of his recruitment. With trips now in the books to both Iowa State and Ball State, Otomewo hopes to visit Toledo this spring and eventually get to Miami (OH).
What was the standout moment from his Iowa State trip?
“How coach [Eli] Rasheed broke down film and how he sat down in the film room,” Otomewo said. “[He likes] my hands and [told me] to stay lower. He said I had a high ceiling and he liked my film and stuff like that, that’s what Coach Rasheed said. He said [I fit] as a pass rusher and the standup defensive end.”
Otomewo doesn’t currently have a timeline for a decision but hopes to continue to sort through his options in the coming months.
“I feel like it’s picking up. It’s been going good,” Otomewo said. “I’ve been trying to get to colleges to see what they have to offer [and] see where the best fit is for me and my family.”
