For the last two seasons, Phillip Ely played quarterback for Matt Campbell.
After getting a chance to see what Ely bought to the table as a player and leader, Campbell has now added Ely to his staff at Iowa State as a defensive graduate assistant.
Ely was an Army All-American and highly recruited quarterback prospect coming of Tampa Plant. He committed to and signed with Alabama where he played in six games and came away with two national championship rings.
After transferring to Toledo, Ely won the starting job and passed for 2,965 yards and 23 touchdowns in two seasons.
Campbell, upon adding him to staff, referred to Ely as a "great leader, elite winner and an amazing role model."
