Official visitors for basketball and football teams at Iowa State expected for San Jose State Game

Go "Inside" for the latest on the recruiting visits this weekend at Iowa State in both football and basketball.

The Iowa State football coaching staff will be hosting a ton of major football targets this weekend when they face off against San Jose State tomorrow. Matt Campbell and is set to host four official visitors and a ton of unofficial visitors, including both 2017 and 2018 prospects.

Here’s the full breakdown.

This will be the first time Milton will be back in Ames since his unofficial visit back on June 25th. The Cyclones look to be in real playing for a potential commitment from the Florida native this weekend, he informed me that it’s “possible” and that Iowa State is a “top school” of his. With a major need at the receiver position for the current roster, expect the coaching staff to put the full-court press on him.

The Cyclones have really been trending up heading into this official visit from Dixon. However, it does seem to be a recruiting battle between Utah and Iowa State for Dixon’s services, and this visit could have huge implications within his recruitment.

Nixon is one of the top JUCO cornerbacks in the nation for the 2017 recruiting cycle. He has offers from programs like Arkansas, Boise State, California, Missouri, and may others. But the staff has made it very clear that he is a major need, since his offer on March 9th and will likely receive early playing time.

When the big-time JUCO prospect arrives on campus he will be reunited with his former teammate and current Iowa State player, D’Andre Payne. Nixon will also be taking an official visit to Missouri on October 25th.

Leo is one of the official visitors that we will be keeping a close eye on during his visit to Iowa State this weekend. Has has been committed to Arizona since August 19th.” Obviously, Leo is teammates with Keisean Nixon and that could play a factor here for the Cyclones, especially if one of them commits to the Cyclones. Leo has being pursued by Matt Campbell and the staff for quite sometime now because of the major need heading into next year, as they will graduate six defensive linemen next season.

Similar to Matt Campbell, but on the basketball side at Iowa State, Steve Prohm will also be hosting some of his own top targets for the basketball program. Here’s the latest going into this weekend:

In terms of all the visitors on campus, Wigginton might just be the most important. The four-star prospect, according to Scout could be the Cyclones biggest target - even if they land him. However, Iowa State has some ground to make up in Wigginton’s recruitment as he is fresh off a visit with Oregon, and they look like they may just hold the lead.

Stokes is another huge prospect who will be in Ames this weekend. Last weekend, he was at Tennessee and from what I have heard, he loved the visit as he is originally from Memphis. Along with his visit to Iowa State this weekend, he has also scheduled visits to TCU, North Carolina and Florida. The staff will definitely be going all in while Stokes is on campus, as they would really like to combine him and their current power forward commit, KeyShawn Feazell. Something else worth noting here is we have heard regarding Stokes: Iowa State currently leads and might just pick up a commitment from his this weekend. That is something we’ll monitor.

Lewis, a current Iowa State commit, will also be on campus this weekend for a visit. I full expect the fellow commit to help the coaching staff recruit both Stokes and Washington on their visits. This will be the first time he will be visiting Ames since August 9th.

Other Notable Visitors:

Iowa State will also get visits from a few in-state 2017 football commits: Colin Newell, O’Rien Vance, Devon Moore, Alex Kleinow, and John Negel. Like always, I would expect those guys recruit some of the uncommitted visitors on campus during this weekend. Most importantly, quarterback commit Devon Moore.

Moore told me about recruiting other prospects: “I usually just let the coaches let me know who they are interested in,” Moore informed. “I try to keep in contact with them and let them know what we can build  in Ames.”

There will always be a bunch of prospects during big recrutiing weekends who haven’t been offered yet or are still being looked at by the coaches. Here is the list: Derek Greiner ( target at LB no offer yet from Williamsburg HS), Rory Larson ( target at LB no offer yet from Dubuque HS), Michael Santi  (target at RB no offer yet from Madrid HS), Levi Junging (WR  target, no offer yet),  and Pell Christian (HS Carlton Todd, ath  target, no offer yet West Waterloo HS).

These are the offered prospects that aren’t huge targets as of right now, but might be later on: Zack Ross ( OL has offer Dowling Catholic HS), Andrew Todd (OL has offer Washington HS), Jack Koerner (safety target Dowling Catholic HS), and Rory Walling (LB target from East HS). Andrew Todd and Zach Ross are two prospects to keep an eye on, both have in Ames a few times over the last few months, including for the season opener on September 3rd.
