McKinney enjoys recent visit to Ames

All eyes and focus is still heavily on the current 2017 recruiting cycle. However, the staff is still taking a few quick peeks into the 2018 recruiting class. One of the prospects that Iowa State is looking at is 2018 Iowa Western Community College OT Anthony McKinney. The 6-foot-9, 310-pound JUCO prospect is currently only a freshman and won’t enroll into another program until next years recruiting class.

Back on November 5th, Matt Campbell was out to watch one of his games at Iowa Western. The head ball coach walked away very impressed, and only two days after McKinney received his first offer from Iowa State on November 7th.

“I received my offer on November 7th, after Campbell came to our game two days earlier,” McKinney said about his Iowa State offer. “This offer has meant a lot to me. It feels great to know that someone believes in me, I never had an offer before but things are beginning to feel like they are paying off. This drives me to make myself better in practice everyday rather than being satisfied.

“I felt honored that he would take the time out of his day to watch me play. I didn't believe it until I saw him standing with us on the sidelines. I think I am more of a priority then I think. They stressed how badly they need offensive lineman.”

Iowa State was McKinney’s first offer within his recruitment, but won’t be his last. He currently is receiving heavy interest from Oklahoma, Texas Tech, West Virginia, Syracuse, and others. Well, the Cyclones also helped McKinney experience another first of his in the recruiting process, that was his first unofficial visit and it occurred this weekend against Texas Tech.

“This is my first game day visit, but the coaching staff did a outstanding job, I would give them a 10. I really enjoyed every moment I was there. My experience was a lot better than I expected. I took a tour of the facility and sat down with coaches and just talked, they wanted to make me feel as comfortable as possible and wanted to get to know more about me.”

McKinney has quickly become one of Iowa State’s top JUCO and overall targets in the 2018 class. As a result, his relationship that is fairly new has started to grow and expand. During his visit to Ames, he had a chance to sit down and talk with Matt Campbell and Tom Manning.

“The relationship has been great from start. They treat me as if I'm apart of the family and I'm grateful for that. I sat down and talked to most of the coaching staff individually on this visit. Coach Campbell told me he was glad I came on the visit, he liked my size and athleticism.”

Even though Iowa State is his only offer as of right now, the question still has to be asked: where do the Cyclones stand with McKinney after his visit?

“They currently are my leader, but I'm keeping my options open because I still believe I will get more offers.”
