Iowa State has built a solid pipeline from Colerain High School, located in Cincinnati, Ohio to Iowa State. With the Matt Campbell and the new staff coming from the state of Ohio, where they had to recruit a lot out of the city of Cincinnati, the success and experience recruiting out of that territory is there.
The latest Iowa State-Colerain High School pipeline happened in last year’s class with 5-foot-10, 175-pound freshman receiver Deshaunte Jones. It appears that the staff is trying to continue the pipeline by landing 2017 three-star safety Keontae Jones, the brother of Deshaunte Jones.
The coaching staff held Keontae on one of his many unofficial visits to Ames this past weekend when they took on the West Virginia Mountaineers.
“I have been to Iowa State a couple times before and there wasn’t anything that I hadn’t seen before, but it’s always good to be in Ames,” Jones said about his visit. “The loss was disappointing, but Iowa State will definitely be a good force next year. The fans are very supportive.”
As expected, when Jones normally comes into town, he heads to his brothers dorm and reunites with him. The two, like many brothers, have a very tight relationship and are always happy to see each other. But when it comes to his recruitment, Deshaunte wants what’s best for his brother.
“I went to the game and visited my brother in his dorm. We just talked about how the game went and that he had a pretty good game himself. We are very close, and have always been. With my recruitment, he has told me multiple times to just go to the best place for me.”
Jones and the coaching staff didn’t get a chance to truly sit down and talk to each other during the visit on Saturday because of the game and other recruits who were visiting. However, before his visit he has been in constant contact with Coach Campbell and Gasser.
“The relationship between the coaches and I is pretty well. I talk to them every week, Coach Campbell and Coach Gasser just touching base with each other. I don’t think it’s a huge deal not getting to sit down with them and have a conversation because we talk so much so often.”
The 6-foot, 173-pounder still has no leader following his visit, despite all the swirling rumors that he is the silent verbal commitment from last weekend. He is still planning on taking some of his official visits to programs like Indiana for sure. In terms of a commitment date, there is not one currently.
