ISU High on Ponton's List, but Big 10 Lurks

The Cyclones continue to receive a favorable grade from Tampa (Fla.) Hillsborough's Ricky Ponton, but a couple of top Big 10 programs are beginning to express some interest in the playmaking inside linebacker, who is being recruited to play strong safety in college.

"I've got scholarship offers from Iowa State, Pittsburgh and Ball State," said Ricky Ponton, who led his team to a victory over Middleton last weekend. "Michigan and Wisconsin are talking to me a little bit seriously. I don't really have any favorites, although I really like Iowa State. I'm going to set my official visits in the near future."

Ponton's primary recruiter in Ames is secondary coach Chris Ash, who would like to move him to strong safety at the next level. Ponton also plays running back for Hillsborough and rushed for 121 yards on 11 carries last Friday.

"Coach Ash is a nice guy and I really like him," Ponton said. "We keep in touch and talk a lot about the games. He calls me every week to see what's going on. He's supposed to be coming down here shortly to visit me in school, talk to me a little bit and watch practice.

"I play inside linebacker right now, but I'm mainly being recruited at strong safety and running back. Iowa State wants me to play strong safety. The coaches say I have quick feet, am always around the ball and have pretty good speed."
