Coleman, Paulson Pins Lead ISU

AMES, Iowa -- Heavyweight Scott Coleman and 157-pounder Trent Paulson each pinned their opponent to lead No. 2 Iowa State to a 28-9 win over Tennessee-Chattanooga Tuesday night in Hilton Coliseum. The win was not enough for ISU head coach Bobby Douglas.

"A win is a win," Douglas said. "Still, I think we were a little flat tonight coming off the Midlands Tournament. We have two months until the postseason and a lot of work to get done."

Coleman had fallen behind UTC's Wes Taylor, 4-0 in the first period but roared back to take a 12-4 lead before pinning Taylor at the 5:46 mark in the third period. Coleman improves to 9-4.

"The beginning the season didn't happen like I wanted it to," Coleman said. "But I am focusing on improving in each match."

In the night's final match, Paulson jumped out to a 5-0 first-period lead against Lloyd Rogers and after a three-point near fall, got another takedown that led to a fall in 1:44. Paulson improves to 18-2.

In battles involving rated wrestlers, No. 8 165-pounder Travis Paulson of ISU scored a 3-1 overtime win against 10th-rated John Sioredas to open the meet. Paulson improves to 15-3. Sioredas is now 9-1. Iowa State 125-pounder Grant Nakamura, ranked 16th nationally and coming off a runner-up finish at the Midlands, trailed No. 14 Matt Pitts, 4-1 after one period. But the Cyclone junior came back with a takedown, near fall and reversal in the second period en route to a 12-8 win. Nakamura is now 7-2.

Iowa State plays host to No. 7 Minnesota Sunday at 2 p.m.
