ISU Adds DB for Class of 2005

Iowa State hosted eight visitors over the weekend, and the coaches have already picked up a verbal commitment from one of those players. The Cyclones' 17th known commitment for the Class of 2005 comes at a position of need.

Denver (Colo.) Montbello cornerback Steve Johnson, a 6-foot, 185-pounder with 4.5 speed, gives ISU some much-needed depth at the position. He actually made his decision well before he hopped a plane for Colorado on Sunday.

"I'm going to Iowa State," said Johnson, who added that he will cancel his scheduled visit to Idaho in two weeks. "I told Coach McCarney yesterday. I like the players and they seem like they're real cool. I like the team. It seems like they've got a lot of good things going. I can't wait to get out there."

McCarney and assistant coach Tony Alford will follow up on Johnson's trip with an in-home visit on Monday night.

Johnson already had a good feeling going into his trip to Ames, but his experience this weekend sold him on the idea of playing for ISU.

"My visit was real good," he said. "We went out to eat and hung out with the players. They showed all of their facilities and showed us around. I finished my visit this morning and ate breakfast at Coach McCarney's house this morning."

Starting cornerback DeAndre Jackson hosted Johnson on the visit.
