Cyclones Get Late Addition for '05

The Mississippi junior college ranks were very good to Iowa State in last year's recruiting class, and it continues to be in the completion of the 2005 group of newcomers. The Cyclones added their 24th known verbal commitment from a talented defensive player from within the state.

Itawamba College rush defensive end John Machado has given ISU coaches his word and is set to sign on the dotted line Wednesday morning.

"It was between Iowa State and Southern Miss, and he's picking Iowa State," said Itawamba defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator Ferrell Trimm. "That was as of last night when I talked to him. He went on a visit up there and really enjoyed it. He likes the chance to play in the Big 12 and indoor facility they just built. He has a chance to play in a bigger conference and go against the best."

Machado took his official visit to ISU the weekend of Dec. 10. Trimm has no doubt that his pupil will contribute at the next level.

"He's definitely a Division I player," Trimm said. "He's a very good rush end. Although he is a bit smaller, he is physical enough to play the run. He's got great speed and is a good pass rusher. Whether it was a three-man or four-man rush, he got it done for us. He was our best player on defense."

Machado ranked second in the conference with 10 sacks and added more than 40 tackles.
