Post-Signing Day Evaluation: Johnson is breaking down Iowa State's football recruiting class of 2005, one by one. The 12th in a series of 25 player evaluations is Denver (Colo.) Montbello cornerback Steve Johnson.

Steve Johnson
Defensive Back
Denver, Colo. (Montbello HS)

The Particulars -- Second-team all-state selection by the Rocky Mountain News in Class 5A ... honorable mention all-state pick by the Denver Post ... had four interceptions his senior year, 13 for his career ... ran three picks back for scores ... team was 25-10 his final three seasons, with playoff appearances each year ... played defense exclusively as a senior after playing both ways his first two seasons ... coached by Oliver Lucas.

Seals' scouting report – Another physical upgrade to the Cyclone secondary, Johnson has proven to be a capable player on both sides of the ball. He has the size, strength, and speed to become a contributor as a freshman. Johnson is another in a long line of Division I signees from Montbello.

ISU secondary coach Chris Ash on Johnson – "He's a bigger corner and is a very physical kid. When you watch him on tape, he's not afraid to hit you and made a lot of plays on the ball. He's got good bloodlines; his dad was a good college player and has been around the game for a long time. He has taught his son a lot of things about the cornerback position. We're excited to get him here, work with him, and see how he does."

Short-term outlook – As mentioned above, Cyclone coaches like Johnson's size and strength, which will allow him an early opportunity to make an impact. He has also shown his abilities tackling in the open field, which will bolster his chances.
