Post-Signing Day Evaluation: Mahoski is breaking down Iowa State's football recruiting class of 2005, one by one. The 15th in a series of 25 player evaluations is Bettendorf (Iowa) placekicker Chris Mahoski.

Chris Mahoski
Bettendorf, Iowa (Bettendorf HS)

The Particulars -- First-team all-state pick in Class 4A by the Iowa Newspaper Association ... first-team all-Metro (Quad Cities) ... first-team all-conference ... team was state champion (13-0) ... was 69-of-71 on PATs and 8-of-11 on field-goal attempts as a senior ... 69 PATs tie for an Iowa single-season record ... 93 points tie for second in Iowa single-season history (for kickers) ... recorded 51 touchbacks on 92 kickoffs ... first-team all-conference selection as a junior on a 9-2 playoff squad ... coached by Randy Scott ... three-year soccer letterwinner.

Seals' scouting report – Can't argue with the numbers, as Mahoski was nearly perfect on extra points and proficient on field goals while helping his team to a Class 4A title. He has also put in the time to perfect his trade, traveling to kicking camps across the country.

ISU special teams coach Terry Allen – "We spent a lot of time evaluating and felt like Chris was a guy we wanted. I think it's a good fit. We need competition at that position. I don't think anyone is disappointed with what Bret (Culbertson) did at the end of the year, except that one miss, but we certainly need more competition. Chris will do that for us. Instead of that position being an Achilles' Heel for us, we hope it can be a strength for years to come."

Short-term outlook – There was no secret as to why head coach Dan McCarney brought Mahoski in for this class. Although Bret Culbertson will enter training camp as the starter – based on his efforts last fall – Mahoski could make an early impact. Yes, even with Tony Yelk returning for a sixth season.
