As ISU's padded camp winds down in Ames, a young man from just a ways further south down I-35 decided to become the first prospect to give a commitment to sign with the Cyclones for the football recruiting class of 2006.
After spending Wednesday and
Thursday at Iowa
State's padded camp, Matt Hulbert was
ready to make his decision known. He drove back up to
Ames Friday morning to tell the ISU
coaching staff he was going to be a Cyclone.
"They've been recruiting me for
awhile," Hulbert said. "I'd say about a year maybe a little more. I really like
them a lot and I can't find anything wrong – there's nothing I don't
At 6-foot-7, 270 pounds, Hulbert
played both offensive and defensive line for
Ankeny, but will play for Coach
Barney Cotton on the offensive line as a Cyclone.
Hulbert also had offers from
Kansas and was receiving interest
"I just wanted to make it formal
and tell them in person rather than over the phone," Hulbert said. "[The
coaches] were real excited; they were really happy. They were glad I chose
State and are looking forward to
having me on the team."
