Meet a trio of new Cyclones

Meet three of the newest Cyclone defenders. Tyrone McKenzie comes to Iowa State from the Michgian State Spartans. He will sit out this year because of the transfer and have three years remaining with the Cyclones. Jon Banks was a late addition to the ISU squad, he joined the team after finishing up his degree at Iowa Central Community College earlier this summer. Alvin Bowen played a season at Garden City Community College, he led the team in tackles (77) and tackles for a loss (14).

Tyrone McKenzie

What are some of the things you did to prepare yourself for the season, whether you were going to play or not?

McKenzie: Well I was up here for about five weeks this summer working out with the team. I just found out last week that I wasn't going to be able to play. That really isn't a downfall though that just gives me a chance to learn the defense. I am going to get a chance to learn the schemes, work with the team and get better. I am going to work with the scout team this year and after that hopefully I can move up and take Tim Dobbins' spot when he leaves.

How disappointed were you when you found out you weren't going to play this year?

McKenzie: I am not really that disappointed. Last year at Michigan State I was a true freshman and didn't really get a chance to grasp the plays. Now I get the chance to sit back relax, help the team on scout team and hopefully get my name out there. I think that will be a great thing for me.

How do you compare Iowa State to Michigan State?

McKenzie: Iowa State is more of a bond. The coaches have been great. We do everything as a team and I think that is why they win football games. I am really enjoying it here in Ames, Iowa. We have a great team connection.

Jon Banks

You coming to Iowa State, was it something that had been in the works for a long time or did it come together pretty late?

Banks: It has been in the works since this spring around April or May. I just had to finish up some summer classes to get my degree finished up.

Are you going to be on scholarship?

Banks: Yes I am.

What kind of impact are you looking to make this year?

Banks: I am not expecting to make much of an impact right away. I am going to do everything I can to produce and then next year I look forward to coming back and possibly starting.

Alvin "Ace" Bowen

What are some of the things you have done to get yourself ready for the season?

Bowen: I was here working out all summer. I watched a lot of film and went over a lot of things with Coach Skladany.

Do you like it here at Iowa State?

Bowen: Yeah definitely, I like everything. I like the facilities, the people, basically everything.
