ISU volleyball squad opens the season this weekend

Christy Johnson and the Cyclones will face Northern Colorado and Creighton on Saturday

First-year coach Christy Johnson and the Iowa State volleyball team will open its 2005 season with matches against Northern Colorado and Creighton in the Bluejay Invitational on Saturday in Omaha, Neb. The Cyclones will face UNC at noon followed by a match with Creighton at 7 p.m.

"We are really excited to get going this weekend," said Johnson. "Both Creighton and Northern Colorado are solid programs and we'll have a great chance to see where our team is at. The team has been working very hard this preseason and I feel we are ready to compete. I know that we have a lot of work ahead of us this season and we have a lot to prove but we are looking forward to the challenge."

The Cyclones return five starters and 10 letterwinners from last year's team including Amanda Craig and Katie Jessen, who led the Cougars in assists and kills last year, respectively. Katie Churm also returns to the Cyclones after finishing in the top five in the Big 12 in both digs per game and service aces per game in her sophomore campaign.

ISU also returns its top three blockers from last season. Sophomore Erin Boeve led the Cyclones as a freshman with 69 blocks while Katie Kruenegel and Ashlie McWee each recorded 68 blocks.
