Players to Watch

Keep an eye out for these six players on Saturday night as Iowa State and Illinois State begin the 2005 season.

Iowa State Cyclones

Austin Flynn

Wide Receiver

6-1             200 pounds

redshirt junior

Austin Flynn will be making his first career start at wide receiver for the Cyclones after making the switch to wide receiver from quarterback over spring drills. In last years season opener Flynn came off the bench against Northern Iowa, completing 2-of-3 passes for 37 yards and a touchdown. His first pass of the season was a 23 yard touchdown toss to Todd Blythe.

Adam Carper

SAM linebacker

6-2             200 pounds

redshirt freshman

Carper will be the only freshman in the ISU starting line-up on Saturday. The Clarinda native was one the biggest surprises of spring ball working himself into the starting SAM linebacker position. A dual-threat, Carper played both quarterback and defensive back at Clarinda where he finished his career with 169 tackles (126 solo), 15 interceptions (two touchdowns) and eight fumble recoveries.

Jason Berryman

RUSH end

6-3             250 pounds

redshirt sophomore

After sitting out the 2004 campaign, Berryman is back in a starting role. As a freshman in 2003, he was the Big 12's Defensive Newcomer of the Year and co-freshman defensive player of the year by the league's coaches. He also earned all-Big 12 honors and was chosen as Iowa State's Most Valuable Player. Anchoring the Cyclone defense he amassed 100 tackles, 19 quarterback hurries and had three sacks.

Illinois State Redbirds

Brian Thompson

Running back

5-7             195 pounds

redshirt senior

It will be a homecoming for Thompson who began his collegiate career as a Cyclone in 2001. After redshirting his initial freshman season at Iowa State, Thompson finished the 2002 campaign with 305 rushing yards and four touchdowns. The following year he appeared in all 12 games on special teams duty. Thompson transferred to Illinois State prior to fall camp in 2004; after a slow start (four carries, two yards, and two fumbles in the first four games) he led the Redbirds in rushing with 866 yards.

Stafford Davis

6-2             302 pounds

Redshirt senior

Entering his senior season, Stafford Davis has started every game of his collegiate career (34 games). The preseason first team all-American will have a little twist in 2005; all of Davis' previous starts have come at the left guard position, but in the beginning of fall camp Davis moved to center. In 2004 Davis was part of 747 snaps with 132 knockdowns and only three missed assignments; he had two games with more than 20 knockdowns.

Ryan Hoffman

6-2             195 pounds

Redshirt senior

Punter Ryan Hoffman is one of the best in the business; in 2004 he ranked No. 3 nationally with a 43.87 yard punting average, which was also first in the Gateway Conference. He had a season long punt of 70 yards at Indiana State and again against Youngstown State. Hoffman placed sixteen of his 55 punts inside the 20-yard line.
