Rough weekend for ISU volleyball squad

The ISU volleyball squad had a rough weekend at the Results Advertising Missouri State Classic going 2-9. The team will open Big 12 play on Wednesday at Missouri.

 Arkansas Downs Iowa State, 3-0

 

The Iowa State volleyball team fell to Arkansas, 3-0 (22-30, 25-30, 24-30), in the Results Advertising Missouri State Classic on Saturday afternoon. Arkansas hit .252 as a team and blocked 12 Iowa State attacks to control the net.

 

"We knew coming down here that we would see three good teams," said head coach Christy Johnson. "We saw some glimpses of good things out of our team but also some things that we need to work on for the Big 12 opener on Wednesday."

 

Iowa State (6-4) could not overcome a solid attack by the Lady Razorbacks in the first game, falling 30-22. Arkansas hit .417 in the first game while holding the Cyclones to just a .188 hitting percentage. Erin Boeve had seven kills in the first game to lead Iowa State.

 

Arkansas out hit Iowa State, .229 to .067, in the second game and was ahead from the beginning. Katie Kruenegel had two kills off the bench for the Cyclones in the game.

 

The Cyclones again struggled to get anything going in the fourth game, falling behind 12-7. ISU would rally to tie it at 16-16 but Arkansas used a run of its own to take the game, 30-24.

 

Boeve led the Cyclones with 13 kills in the match. Amanda Craig had 27 assists and 10 digs to lead the Cyclones in both categories.

 

Kele Brewer and Denitza Koleve had 11 kills each to lead Arkansas.

 

The Cyclones will open Big 12 play on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Missouri.

 

 

Missouri State Holds Off Cyclones, 3-1

 

Iowa State (6-3) was unable to take advantage of 16 team blocks as they fell to Missouri State, 3-1 (30-28, 31-33, 20-30, 24-30), in action at the Results Advertising Missouri State Classic.

 

The Cyclones dominated at the net on their way to a 30-28 first game win. ISU had eight blocks to Missouri State's two and Katie Churm was solid defensively, notching nine digs in the game.

 

Game two saw the Cyclones jump out to a 10-6 lead only to have Missouri State take the lead back with a 5-0 run of their own. The Bears extended the lead to 28-23 before the Cyclones rallied to tie it at 29-29 after a kill by Nicole Lorenzen. A service ace by Missouri State's Adeana McAfee gave the Bears a 33-31 win and tied the match at 1-1.

 

Missouri State controlled the third game from the start but ISU staged a rally, closing the gap to 23-20. The Bears hit .211 in the game and controlled the net, picking up five blocks in the game.

 

Missouri State hit .354 in the fourth game to down the Cyclones, 30-24, and take the match.

 

Lorenzen led ISU with 12 kills and 11 digs in the match. Churm had 19 digs and Amanda Craig led the offensive attack with 41 assists in the loss.

 

 

Cyclone Volleyball Falls to Utah, 3-1

 

Iowa State was unable to overcome a .259 hitting percentage and 13 blocks by Utah, falling to the Utes, 3-1 (30-26, 28-30, 22-30, 27-30), on Friday in the Results Advertising Missouri State Classic.

 

In the first game, Iowa State (6-2) controlled the game despite being out hit .163 to .150. The Cyclones took a 20-16 lead after a kill by Erin Boeve. Utah (4-2) rallied to tie it at 21-21 before the Cyclones went on a 9-5 run to capture the game 30-26.

 

Utah hit .333 in game two in evening the match up at 1-1. The Cyclones held a 20-16 lead but were unable to stop the Utes' hitting attack. Katie Jessen had four kills in the second game but it wasn't enough as Utah took the game, 30-28.

 

Utah again out hit the Cyclones, .268 to .105, to capture game three and go up 2-1 in the match. ISU's Katie Churm had eight digs in the game to lead the Cyclones.

 

The Cyclones were unable to force a fifth game with Utah taking game four, 30-27.
