Iowa State among McWhirter's favorites

Sean McWhirter wants to make his college decision soon, but not just yet.

Three and a half hours north of Ames in Long Lake, Minn. the Cyclones had made an impression on recruit Sean McWhirter with their 23-3 domination of No. 8 Iowa.

"It was a really good game," McWhirter said. "I had a chance to see how good the defensive coordinator is and I really liked that he called a really good game."

McWhirter, a 6-foot-3, 250-pound, defensive end, from Long Lake (Minn.) Orono, had 113 tackles, 16 tackles for loss and 10 sacks as a junior.

McWhirter has scholarship offers from Minnesota, Iowa State and Colorado State; he plays both linebacker and defensive end, but will probably play the latter on the collegiate level.

"I like defensive end it's a good position for me," he said.

McWhirter attended Iowa State's camp for a day in July and liked what he saw.

"It went really well," he said. "I really liked the chance to work with the coaches."

Another thing McWhirter likes about Iowa State is the location.

"I've always liked Iowa, believe it or not," he said. "I'm not a huge city guy. I really like the coaching staff and I also liked the campus as well."

There are also other factors that will weigh into McWhirter's decision.

"I like tradition in a program," he said. "I [need] to like the coaching staff and strength and conditioning coaches because you spend a lot of time with them and obviously academics as well."

McWhirter hasn't decided on a major, but he thinks he might pursue the business avenue.

"I want to get my decision made soon, but I don't want to make it until I feel completely comfortable," he said.
